Jarl , a relatively new addition to SCAF finally gets the orders they have been waiting for. Lord Mazzio is looking to increase the holdings SCAF currently claims, and most importantly, seeks to spread his influence over nearby populated worlds so that this small nation goes from its meager 350,000 to millions. On the nearby system of Unn, several psionics worshipping cults have sprung up. An accord has been reached with The Aspect of Fire , and those who inhabit The Sinking Tower, though there are two other groups ont he planet who venerate their own leaders more than Silvano- and they refuse to allow their planet entry into SCAF

Lord Mazzio has reached out to collaborators in The Primal Path, the Mist Speakers, and Forest Heralds, and there are those standing ready in each group to help overthrow their leaders and pledge themselves to Lord Mazzio's superior might. When your own abilities as a finder, and hunter of psions became known to SCAF, it seemed only a matter of time until you were assigned to the mission. That day seems to come today

There are small cells within each settlement identified, and the pre arranged signal is to make a circle of rocks at the edge of the settled space. The following night, someone from one of the cells will be there. It is not an elegant system, but on a world where minds can be read, the future can be seen, and metaspace foils most conventional infiltration attempts, something so stupid it might actually work has ironically been proven the best way. the class of shuttle is called a puddle jumper, with a robust drive system and enough provisions to keep it stocked for extended operations away from the safety of Bergasa, and Mount Home. A small crew is also aboard, mostly to ensure the smooth running of the ship, and to help you with anything you may need.

There is a pilot, co pilot, and navigator sitting up front behind a blast shutter that is currently raised- as you're in safe territory. The crew bay is rectangular with bunks, a small galley, and the rest is storage space. The crew chief, and two marines occupy the rest of the compliment here-aside from you

Everyone seems well, and are eager to get underway. This is a first assignment for almost everyone but the Co-Pilot, and success here means selection for better missions, a ncie bump in pay, and some favorable outlook by SCAF decision makers. you can feel a mix of precision and excitement in the crew space as final checks are made, and departure clearance is given. (there is a day of downtime during the spike flight from Bergasa to your destination, we have a list of downtime activities on roll20 near the top of the handouts page)

The combat rifle is the only thing available right now, and modifications to it would sadly take longer than your trip would allow to install. There is extra ammunition for it, to the tune of 90 more rounds

The volcano forge town allows your craft to land and will serve as friendly soil for the time you intend to be working on this planet. The workers here keep their distance , but you’re met by The Aspect himself, a kindly looking middle aged man who wears the clothing of a blacksmith and craftsman rather than the finery of a ruler. He raises a hand in greeting as any words he shouts will be lost in the powering down of the ships engines.

"The Mist Speakers. They have a strong position in the woods, and are powerful metapsions and telepaths. They're proud, putting it simply. If bending the knee is the sensible option, they're not proud, but they need to be shown no better alternative exists if its going to be done without violence.

The forest is a misty expanse of thick mangrove like trees that make a dense canopy. Primates chirp, birds flap their wings from branch to branch, and bugs buzz in the humid air. Small paths through the trees have been carved by the passage of wider animals and cross cross the forest here for kilometers around.

Jarl grabs his gear from the locker, including the extra ammo, stowing it into his backpack. "I'm off boys, keep the engines warm" Jarl marks the position using his compad noting the heading and heads off into the forest in the direction of the Heralds

You're able to pick out the tracks of the animals that are likely the smallest and least dangerous and after a half hour of walking you are concealed, and away from any patrols the heralds might be using. The edge of their settlement is carved out fo the wood itself. Gnarled trees form something of a half height fence around the settlement, and the inside of this ring is cleared land, planted with grass, crossed by dirt roads, and with an expanse of space set aside for homes and fields. most of the plowing is being done telekinetically, and the animals in the pastures all seem to be acting in concert as well, as one of the shepherds follows behind the pack of sheep. There are no dogs being used to guide them, yet them remain cohesive and do not wander. A hawk flies overhead, circling and cawing its harsh crry

At nightfall, the village is quieter than normal, and you see two figures move around from the back of one of the storage barns toward you. They do not carry lights but they seem to be able to see where they are going. They are unmistakably walking toward the meeting place.

Jarl seems thoughtful "As much as I'd like to toot my own horn, my abilities are less stealth and more subversion of expectation. As you proved earlier, I won't be able to hide amongst the forest undetected from someone like the Herald, let alone get the stone onto him without him knowing while he's at his most alert. I suppose he wouldn't be amenable to meeting me for any kind of talks either. In which case getting it to him while sleeping may be the best option. Unless I've misread anything situationally?"

"I think sleeping is the best option then, but it's too late to try tonight. We can get you into the village for the day, give you a place to rest and a hot meal, and we can start looking into this tomorrow night. Will you come with us?"

They do not reply in order to maintain radio silence but you can see the transmission has gone through.

You're led into the village, keeping low and hidden behind buildings or fence posts whenever necessary before you are taken into a large farm house. A broom that has no one behind it sweeps the floor. Dishes wash themselves, and a rustic butter churn in the corner does its job likewise without a human operator. your contacts are a man and woman, both young, and from their body language, a couple. She snaps her fingers and the tools that are out right now return to their cupboards and cabinets.

"We picked you up from the north, near that cabbage field there. Cabbage, I know. After all this time. Its what we're left with. The Herald normally sleeps in his longhouse, the building at the south side of the square. His retainers occupy the hut next door, and in front of the property. Thankfully they don't keep hunting dogs. If you swing east, and keep to the outskirts, you'll have more buildings blocking you from the town square and being seen by anyone there. It is still a meeting place after all. You'll have to rely on your talents and careful movement, but its the easiest of the two paths

As evening dawns and the sun vanishes behind the trees, there is a knock on the cellar door where you've been hidden for the daylight hours. Your hosts seem very tired, and it is evident that they have been spending energy to keep prying psychic eyes away from the home. "It's time. Grab what you need, and we'll get you through the woods"

You're taken into the woods as sunlight finally fades away entirely. There are bugs chirping in the forest and the shadows of trees grow long on the ground. Some torches begin to light on their own in the village, casting their own jagged shadows into the forest, and around the courtyard. A few of the herd animals are still finding their way in from pasture, and the housecarls' of the Herald laugh heartily in front of their own building as a large cask of ale is brought inside. The heavy door shuts and you hear more men cheering from within. It seems they'll be largely distracted tonight.

the questing metapsionic energy fades away, though the snap of a branch alerts a sleeping guard dog outside the housecarls' meeting building. One of your companions gestures for you and the other to keep moving, and to do so quickly. He will do what he can here to try to silence the creature. As you get moving again, a shaft of yellow light spills out into the dark forest as the door of the building opens, and two soldiers with crossbows look at the dog, and then out at the forest.

(I'll let you know if its necessary) The guards see your companion who stayed behind to try to pacify the dog. "What are you doing out there?!" And there is a whip of cord as a warning shot lands in the ground nearby the companion that stayed behind. You can only hope he is able to talk himself out of it as the rest of you continue moving, and you arrive at a portion of fence overlooking the back door of the Herald's manor, 10m from the treeline where you observe. There is no one in the yard, no dogs or other animals, and the ground looks reasonably firm which should help obscure any of your footprints.

Jarl nods and takes his knife out of the sheath on his belt and hands it to the contact and whispers "If I get caught in there I'd really rather not have them jump immediately to "assassin", hold onto it for me." He then makes for the fence at a crouch walk

she nods, thinking this is a sensible move. "Alright, be careful, make your way straight back here when you're done, and we'll get you back through the wood." There is still no sign of the other rebel, but you can hear the guards talking in loud voices, so there is at least some evidence he is still alive

Peering into room 1 you can see a guard asleep in a chair in front of the low burning fireplace. The manor is quiet and he is the only one occupying the space. The fire is more embers than actual flame, keeping most of the room in shadow. The wooden door leading out into the wider manor is closed as well, and you cannot see beyond it

Without opening it, the door is cool, so there is no significant heat source on the other side- likely meaning there is also no light. You also do not hear anyone walking in the hallway, the guards seem to be occupied either with drinking next door, inattentive, or just off shift right now. The only ones alert at the moment are dealing with your friends, and their attempts to explain the midnight walk in the woods you all seem to be on right now. (edited)

A guard is heading up the stairs , long pole axe held loose over a shoulder. He is facing away from you and his heavy boots scuff the stone steps. He is not paying attention to the floor below, unable to hear the gentle opening of the door.

There is a slight second where the pin moves unexpectedly, but you're able to recover and pry the door open gently. this is an empty bedroom but it seems that some clothing has been left behind, namely some of the guards uniforms and one of the long polearms they favor. The insignia of a guard captain has been sewn onto the sleeves and lapel

7 is accessed through this bedroom and hear the soft crackle of a fire in the other room. There is the clink of a glass being set down onto a h ard surface, and the grumble of someone stretching out after being in the same position for a while. The handle jiggles gently, the door unlocked, but closed

The guard who was heading upstairs seems to have done so, and you do not hear anymore booted footprints patrolling the floor above for the moment. They could of course just be standing still. The list of possible hiding places is narrowing down little by little.

The Mist Speaker's trademark fog only allows the Free Merchant to land about 5km from where their suspected main settlement is. the mist itself is cold, and clings to your clothing in thick droplets like walking through morning dew. Figures begin to materialize from the gloom, four of them in total and they are humanoid in size and shape. For the moment, they're too far for you to be able to identify them clearly

one of them does so, making a show of ejecting the ammunition source and clearing the weapon safely. You're brought into the large settlement and directly into a hunting lodge where the massive skeletons of possible one of each of the planet's great beasts are either directly worked into the construction, mounted on the wall, or made into some of the furnishing here for either light, lounging, or feasting. It looks like almost nothing has gone to waste from these hunts. The Primal Path is a massive and imposing warrior, his collection of hunting weapons arranged on racks around his large chair, where his feet are inclined on a throne rest. He sets a mug of frosty ale down on a small tray, waving away the cup bearer attending him.

But, if you can tell me that that's not how you would see it, and after a few years of watching the rest of the planet prosper without you, that you wouldn't snap at the chance to destabilize the planet if some UNW lap dog sneaks in and hands you the means, Then we'll just leave you alone in your lands. "The last group I was with was a breakaway faction of sunblade users, its uh kinda like a weapon that uses shaped light from what I understand, I myself wasn't a member of the brotherhood proper but an agent doing the odd jobs here and there. We wanted to restore our former Empire to its former grand state. However upstarts like the UNW appeared in our former homes acting like they owned it. Our leader lost it a bit I'll admit but at the time it was all for the revival of the Empire. Eventually they found out where we were and wiped us out save a few ships that scattered out and will likely never be seen again and a few who recognized that most of the problem was self created and ran for it. SCAF picked those few up, keeping us from the groups that comprise the UNW who were, and still are, out for our blood. It was a dangerous choice for them that wouldn't necessarily have any benefit for them but they did it anyway. SCAF is, as far as I know, the only major group in this sector that wants the disparate colonies to be allowed to determine their own way, and is willing to protect them to maintain that self-determination. We are not slaves to SCAF, we are members. If I can't sway you, there will be no more after me sent and you'll just be left alone which is better than I can say for most other major groups in this sector. Jarl stops, drooping slightly, as he isn't really a fan of talking about Brotherhood things.

It shakes its head no, it does not recognize them, but it begins scratching some of its own in the dirt. They are perversions of the characters you are being shown, but you see a few commonalities here- enough to realize they come from a common root language

Leaving the work gang behind you come to the edge of the village where it seems most of the trash has been thrown into a very very large hole. The settlement has a definite boundary of low stones but they’re haphazardly arranged and irregularly spaced from one another. Ruins of a few buildings outside the circle mark where other occupants once claimed the land. Ahead the dark buildings of town are only accented by lights in the windows, from lamps and candles rather than any kind of modern power sources

There are hundreds more of the creatures working and going about some sort of shambolic form of life here, and the largest building is near the back of town- a dark three flooded mostly square structure

They keep their weapons lowered, and from inside you hear the sounds of feet on wooden stairs, pounding gently up them to likely get whom you wish to speak. Several long minutes pass before the gentle plod of a much slower set of footprints comes down the stairs. A gnarled looking creature with grey hair, blind milky eyes, and rotting peg teeth is helped down to the outside, and the guards respectfully move aside, though remain close to protect their spiritual leader

The shaman is first, unwilling to make any of the others do something she is unwilling to do herself. The pressure equalizes, and the creature coughs violently, expelling a wretched glopped of purple black sludge onto the deck has her lungs clear, and she takes her first gasp of clean air in her entire very long life . A few breaths have her coughing again, her lungs not used to the air mix. they'll need to be gradually introduced from the looks of it

Rezious is a sad looking settlement when seen from the air. The windmills here are smog choked ruins, and the farming fields show other abhumans similar in build to the shaman picking wretched crops out of the ground- the blackening husks must be disgusting to eat, and likely provide almost no nutrition. It seems like hard work tilling the badlands soil to try to get it to produce anything of value

The boats have been drawn up onto the shore, and some of them look to have been broken down for housing material. Others are missing entirely from their cradles- probably further cannibalized into other dwellings, or anytihng else the inhabitants needed wood or metals for

Mistbourne is the last zone you have not explored. It is a large settlement and looks to comprise the most dense concentration of natives, and has the most advanced of the buildings. They are primitive in nature, but the construction methods here show the structures to be sturdier than those in other villages

The building is quiet and covered in the dust of years. The books are likewise beginning to rot in the pews and most of the stained glass has been shattered. Looters have left the building alone and you can see gold candlesticks and a few other holy objects such as a bowl, some sort of ratty cloth towel and a few empty vials on a table facing the congregation. It’s not clear what faith this might have been

Town hall has cans on strings hanging in front of the door, and windows. They clank gently in the breeze and can be heard even from a distance. There are nolights on or obvious signs of habitation aside from the impromptu security system

A planet at the edge of the habitable zone close to the suns has the failing remains of humanity clinging to its surface in a few cities and scattered settlements. The Zerbino system also has a barren planet closer to the system edge, with no moons but covered in a thick asteroid field. Remains of an orbital mining station and its attending system mining craft lie deep within the asteroid pack, along a dangerous but navigable route. It does not seem like anyone from the planet has been able to make their way aboard since the events of The Scream.

There is a guard tower every 50m around the settlement. Some of them are in better shape than others, many do not have roofs. A red flare goes up from the one you’re closest to as you get close enough for the sentries to see you. From the center of the settlement a moment later, a matching one is fired skyward. You’re at too great a distance for anything they yell to be heard

As you begin stepping toward the city, the puddlejumper in orbit reports a Protectorate ship has entered the system. It is a free merchant, so likely not coming in with guns blazing, but to be safe the shuttle is going to break orbit and try to hide in the deeper part of the system.

Long rows of shops on this main boulevard stretch before and behind you along with stalls that go a bit of the way into the street. There is a bit of foot traffic as people are doing their morning errands but many are not out yet. There do not seem to be many side streets outside of the conventional city block layout of the city. (not a warrior so you dont have the veteran's luck ability, and you're too close to them to have been able to use fade. The doll requires an on-turn action, and isnt an instant action, so it wouldn't trigger before you were hit)

Jarl feels an intense heat, as he is shot in the back, and falls end over end before blacking out. his vision has not returned when he awakens later, it might be hours, days, it is hard to say. The steady drip of water somewhere else is a constant companion. A cold wind blows from elsewhere in the room. Your leg is bound in irons and you can feel that you've been cut from your armor - your gear taken.

Back aboard the puddlejumper you know the situation in at least one corner of the planet. Zerbino is a big planet, and there are other settlements on the surface with some limited radio traffic passing between them. None seem to be able to reach as far south as Prel's old settlement

Jarl looks over the riots in the city "You just can't get good help these days." He indicates the crew should land in the manor garden again but keep the shuttle buttoned up in case the situation has devolved so much that they would meet the landing with violence.

Landing in the city you can see that by day the violence seems to have willed itself into something like semi quiet. Seven hung bodies line the edge of the manor grounds. Two are guards you recognize from your firefight at the walls a few days ago. The others look to be civilians. You can at least hope they did something to deserve it

The dungeon is still occupied but the people down here have clearly been forgotten about. You find the place where you were chained and the woman you spoke with while blinded is still here, barely clinging to life against the wall

Aside from the woman you'd spoken with, who needs to be carried, only three others are in any kind of shape to survive. Those who could not be moved were given enough sedative to sleep peacefully, forever, by the Puddlejumper's sawbones.

Jarl takes a flare out of the jumper and shoots it into the air and instructs the jumper to fly around the perimeter 3 times playing a recorded message before returning. "To those of you in the city who still hold true to your duties to protect the populace report to where the flare was fired."

You can see a bit of movement in the streets. From above, you witness one group of three people gunned down from a passing window, as they begin walking toward the palace. Others in surrounding streets scatter. There might be other loyalists here, but they'll be hard pressed to come out to support anyone.

They were also thrown in for petty reasons, a windchime that made a noise he did not like, another man who would not surrender a hat that Prel fancied, and finally, a third who simply did not go to the opposite side of the sidewalk fast enough. Most of them had no employment, the city is not a kind place nor was it producing much. They've got no prospects to speak of.

They're too weak to retain much of anything. Everyone is emaciated, has a hard time seeing in bright ship lights, and are dealing with a host of psychological issues from the long days and weeks of isolation in darkness

Jarl opts to get out of the area for the time being, the city will need to be pacified with soldiers of some form or another and without enough bodies to keep the manor secure it would be better to wait things out in orbit or try to accomplish the original mission in the other settlements. He straps in the former prisoners with help from the crew, and then indicates the Settlement on the island at the far north west as the next destination

The town in question is a half flooded ruin. The river has welled against its banks and it looks like the town is divided into a surviving higher elevation area on a large fortified hill, and the urchin side of the settlement that clings to the base of the elevation and exists in the dry spots of the flooded ruins of old town- what little there are.
